Special Issue Information
In recent years, dielectric and plasmonic nanostructures have been widely investigated thanks to their potential to enable a large number of applications in fields ranging from communication, bioscience, and quantum optics to sensing.
Plasmonic nanostructures and nanoparticles allow enhancing light confinement and maximizing light–matter interactions at the nanoscale. Their integration with photonic components and/or with other materials and structures, such as semiconductors and quantum dots, is opening up new fields of application from signal processing to biosensing and optical tweezing.
Dielectric nanostructures, based on high index-contrast materials, have enabled the implementation of miniaturized resonant or nonresonant components, which are basic building blocks not only for signal processing and routing, but also for sensing platforms. Exploiting periodicity, such as in photonic crystals and metasurfaces, enhanced light–matter interaction can be achieved.
The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight the most recent developments of research on dielectric and plasmonic nanostructures and to promote cross-fertilization between different research fields. The topics covered include, but are not limited to, a wide range of research areas, either from the experimental or theoretical points of view, including numerical modeling, nanofabrication, and characterization.
